Record rain since 1920 has fallen in Paris

10 october 2024

Former Tropical Storm Kirk brought record rainfall to Paris this Wednesday, October 9. According to Météo-France, the Paris-Monsouri station recorded 70 mm of rain over the 24-hour period, making this October day the rainiest in more than a century in the nation's capital. The record October rainfall in Paris was observed on October 17, 1920, when 74 mm fell in a single day. Even the National Assembly was affected by the flooding as the Chaban-Delmas building in the Palais Bourbon was inundated with water, as revealed by Dordogne MP Sébastien Peytavi on the X network.

In addition to several streets in Paris, several metro stations were partially flooded, including part of the Saint-Lazare station (lines 3, 12, 13 and 14) and the Odeon metro station (lines 4 and 10). More than 67,000 customers were without power Wednesday night, mostly in the Southwest, said distribution network manager Enedis. Most of the affected households are located in the Atlantic Pyrenees, but also, to a lesser extent, in the Landes, Ariège, Gerais, Rhone, Loire, Aisne and Hautes-Pyrénées, according to Enedis.

According to Météo-France, an orange alert level has been declared in 35 departments due to wind and rain. It was not without casualties. One boater died off the coast of Sete after a strong wave that shook the coast of Hérault capsized three boats, the department's prefecture said. While a yellow flood alert was issued in neighboring Gare, according to Météo-France, Hérault had a green level without any specific warning. However, the prefect specifies that waves can reach up to two meters, leading to a "very high" risk of drowning, and asks "boaters not to go out to sea and the public not to swim or visit the department's beaches."
