As a result of a lightning strike, the on-board operator of the aircraft lost consciousness and fell,” the report says. Due to ongoing lightning strikes, the airport has temporarily postponed aircraft takeoffs and landings and all operations on the runway. The injured man was hospitalized.
According to the city meteorological station in Rize, a strong thunderstorm with rain was observed around 3 pm on Sunday, October 13. 170 mm of precipitation fell in a few hours. At Artvin-Rize airport, according to data of the weather station, a thunderstorm was observed throughout the day, it also rained, but precipitation on this day fell less - 77 mm. Wind gusts in the city did not exceed 7 m/s, while at the airport they reached 14 m/s.
The downpour in Rize caused a landslide in the city center. Due to the landslide, the playground in front of a building became unusable. The soil at the bottom of the children's park belonging to Ceylan Saray Apartment located on Buhara Street of Fener Neighborhood was emptied with the collapse of the retaining walls. Due to the soil sliding to the construction site on the street just below, the newly laid parking lot was left in piles of rubble. The playground and parking garage were closed for precautionary purposes.
