The Benamargosa River overflowed its banks in the province of Málaga

14 november 2024

The heavy rains recorded this Wednesday in the province of Malaga have caused early in the afternoon the overflow of the Benamargosa river as it passes through the Malaga town of the same name, where the water has begun to enter some homes. The mayor of this municipality of about 1,600 inhabitants, Salvador Arcas (PSOE), has explained that the population has been recommended not to be in the street, and has contacted the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters to request assistance. Through its social networks, the City Council has warned that “there is much risk of a lot of water coming all at once and it can be fatal”, so it has asked the neighbors not to be in the street “and much less on the bridge, streams or Cuatro Vientos”.

In the images that have spread on Facebook you can see how the water has overflowed the bridge that crosses the river and has begun to enter the streets. Its mayor assures that he has “never seen” a similar situation, and has assured that he will not remain “calm until the downpour passes”. Faced with the possibility of the river overflowing, some residents had previously opted to go to the homes of relatives located in a higher part of the municipality, he said. According to data from the Hidrosur network, under the Junta de Andalucía, in the Benamargosa river have been recorded this Wednesday 108 liters per square meter, on a day in which most of the province of Malaga is in red warning for heavy rains.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated Wednesday the orange warning for storms in the Malaga regions of Sol and Guadalhorce and Axarquia, which has also raised to red alert for “extreme risk” by the accumulated rainfall in an hour, which can reach up to 70 liters per square meter. This is reported on the website of the Aemet, where it is added that this amount has already been reached in points of the region of Sol and Guadalhorce. In this sense, the director of the meteorological center of the Aemet in Malaga, Jesus Riesco, says that about 80 liters per square meter have been recorded in the agency's station in Malaga capital, although he has clarified that the warning applies to the entire region until the end of the day.

It is recalled that the Aemet keeps these regions under red alert since this morning for persistent rains, with the possibility that the DANA that lashes the province can download up to 120 liters per square meter in twelve hours. In this regard, it is active since late yesterday afternoon the emergency phase of the Plan against the Risk of Floods in Andalusia. According to the website of the public agency, in the province of Malaga the red warning for rain until midnight in the regions of Sol and Guadalhorce and Axarquia, with an accumulation of 120 liters per square meter in twelve hours and 70 l/m2 in one hour. Also, the Aemet has activated the orange warning for storms in both areas throughout the day.
